Sepetin hammaddesi olan Bakırçay ve Bölceköy Çayı kenarlarındaki kara ve beyaz söğüt ağaçlarından kesilen söğüt dalları, zeytinlik aralarından toplanılan hayıt dalları ve kargılar çeşitli aşamalardan geçirilip farklı motiflerle örülerek değişik boylarda ve farklı amaçlarda kullanılan sepetlere dönüşüyor. İki gün sürecek atölye çalışmasında Mustafa Usta ve onun yetiştirdiği çıraklarla birlikte herkes, kendi sepetini Haziran ayının doğal malzemesi olan söğüt dallarından örme deneyimini yaşayacak. 

Mustafa Pancar dede mesleği olan sepetçilik zanaatını babası Cavit Pancar’dan öğrendi ve 7 yaşından beri Bergama’da sürdürüyor. Çok sayıda öğrenci yetiştiren Mustafa Usta, İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi’nin 2017 yılında düzenlediği 15. Tarihe Saygı Yerel Koruma Ödülleri’nde Geleneksel Zanaatların Yaşatılması Ödülü’nü aldı.

Raw materials used in basket weaving are willow branches cut from the black and white willow trees on the banks of the Bakırçay and Bölceköy Streams, along with chaste tree branches and pikes. These raw materials pass through various stages to be transformed into baskets after being knitted with different motifs.  The baskets are of different sizes and are used for different purposes. During this two-day workshop, participants will experience how to weave their own basket from the willow branches that are natural materials for the period of June. This workshop is facilitated by master basket weaver Mustafa and his apprentices. 

Mustafa Pancar learned the craft of basketry, which was his grandfather’s profession, from his father, Cavit Pancar, and has been continuing it in Bergama since he was 7 years old. Mustafa Usta, who has trained a large number of students, received the Award for the Survival of Traditional Crafts at the 15th Respect for History Local Preservation Awards organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in 2017.
